I couldn't finish it. While the book has an interesting premise, it honestly read like an outline of a much larger story. In addition, I couldn't figure out in what period it was set; while there was quite a lot of accurate historical information (info-dumped, rather than woven into the story) there were other things that made no sense, specifically the succession of English kings; I couldn't find anywhere a Henry followed by an Edmund followed by a Richard. Bemused, I gave up at the 50% mark with not a clue where the story was going.The author does a LOT of telling rather than showing, describes in loving detail some events which appear minor and skipping right over others. For example, much is made of the friendship between Rupert and Prince (later King) Edmund, but Edmund's death is described in a single dry paragraph and not a single word is said about the obvious grief Rupert must have suffered. Emotions never seem to figure into the work at all.
A I said at the beginning of my review, this reads like the outline of a much larger work, perhaps a family saga trilogy considering the space of years over which it takes place. It has an interesting premise but the lack of emotions in the work mean that I felt unable to truly empathize with the characters and the events through which they live. I strongly recommend that the author engage a professional editor or join a critique group to assist them in redeveloping the work.
I was unable to finish it, so one star is all that I can offer.

Set in the Middle Ages, Northdale explores the boundaries of gender norms during a time period when women experienced significantly fewer rights and employment and educational opportunities than their male counterparts. The author very favorably depicts women throughout the story, which is rather unusual for a book of this time period. I found the plot moved quickly and the characters were well developed and enjoyable to read about. Overall, I really liked this book. My only criticism surrounds the writing. There were quite a few grammatical errors in the book, and the writing seemed to lack any real emotion. Despite this, I still recommend this book based on the story and characters alone.
This engaging work is set in early England before central justice. Might was right and lords and nobles ruled by tolerable subjugation. You meet Rupert who was recently knighted but angers the king. As a result, he is banned to Northdale- a distant northern area with little prospects and no defense. Even with disadvantages, Rupert remains true to his costly ultraistic goals. He shows compassion and insight. He gains the support of his residents and the respect of others like his wife Sarah. Their lives are truly well lived. In the end Northdale fades away but it leaves a legacy of decency and sends the influence of its educated males and females into the cultures of the future.
Loved this story, easy to read and thoroughly enjoyed storyline.
Striking tale, somewhat unbelievable, but well told.
I enjoyed this a lot. The women leaders and archers along with the come who may hospitalare a bit more science fiction than historical fiction, but that just added spice to an interesting period I first encountered with Bernard CornwelI. It was a violent period, likely more violent than this book, but the respect for women, what there is of it, leavens grim lives.
I could not put it down. It is a good story about a magistrate that truly cares for his people. His and his family's journey through life in good and bad times is fun and interesting and sometimes sad. Don't look for historic acuracy in this tale though.
Northdale is set in England in the middle ages with a penniless 2nd son who won't inherit the estate and an untamable noble daughter as the main characters. There are battles with neighboring nobles, raids by Vikings, and conflicts with the church to contend with. Things don't always work out for the main characters. There is plenty of action that moves the story along beautifully.
I really enjoyed this book, mostly because of the characters. They were real and I cared about what happened to them. The circumstances of their lives and the situations in which they found themselves felt realistic. The solutions to the conflicts faced by the characters where surprising, but not improbable and I ended up admiring the creativity of the author in finding new ways to solve old problems.
I also really liked that there were strong women who were both leaders and warriors. No simpering, insulated princesses in this book! Northdale's male lead characters didn't make a big fuss about treating the women equally -- equality was not a gift the men conferred on them. The women deserved the respect they received because they earned it.
This is the author's first book and while it shows a little in his writing style, he still weaves a great and powerful story.
Give yourself a treat and sit down and read this book. I'm looking forward to others like it.
