Carpathian An Event Group Thriller Event Group Thrillers David L Golemon Books
I very much enjoy the Event Group stories and I'm a fan of Mr. Golemon's books. But I think the author is treading on dangerous territory with Carpathian.First, the writing is bad (lots of misspellings and just bad grammar). Enough has been written by other reviewers about that.
Second, the plots of each of the books are starting to follow a formula -- this is a dead-end strategy for a writer. I would suggest putting forth a book or two in the future that explore the Event Group and their exciting work but without the classic (and over-used) villains and monsters that always take the team to the edge of disaster but, oh wait!, a miracle occurs to save the day. The scene with the cable car floating down the river reminded me of Star Wars Ep. 3 where Obi-Wan and Skywalker were having a sword fight floating down a river of lava. Just unimaginative writing.
Third, for a team that consists of the world's smartest people, they do ask a lot of stupid questions. I counted at least six times where one of these geniuses asked, "What do you mean?" when the answer was already pretty easy to anticipate. That's distracting. Just let the dialog go with the explanation without making one of the team look stupid.
Finally, I thought the closing twist in this book was borderline genius and really demonstrates why I am a fan of this author. I hope the next one tells what promises to be a great time-travel story without taking the same old stale route of monster or villain. This could be an exciting puzzle that demonstrates capability of the Event Group working at its very best.

Carpathian An Event Group Thriller Event Group Thrillers David L Golemon Books Reviews
Is this the same David Golemon who wrote the early Event thrillers? Is he...well? Does he have a new editor, or no editor?
I don't get hung up on a few typos, but now it's more than a few, plus grammar, sentence structure, and timeline problems. Sometimes it's just all jumbled.
His most recent 2-3 books just seem so different from the first 3-4 Event books. I've honestly wondered if someone else is or was writing under that name.
I couldn't put the first ones down, but I can hardly slog through these last two. It just makes me really curious what happened.
Action packed story kept me glued to my chair until I finished it. Yes, I lost some sleep over the course of a couple days but what the heck - that is what a good story is all about. Highly recommend!
If you also like ancient history, this is definitely a read for you.
I read somewhere that the Yazidi (that;s right, the very same ones being killed and enslaved by ISIS) are actually direct descendants of Noah! Of course, this has nothing whatever to do with the book being reviewed, except in a roundabout analogy. Maybe the author will pick up on that thread - Now THAT would be an interesting read!!
As I have said before, in my ratings of DLG's novels, I like his style and especially most of his premises. I especially like the backstories he comes up with. Give that part five stars!
Give one star to the ever-present grammatical, spelling and punctuation (especially non-use of commas) errors that make it hard for me to follow the text. Although I must admit, this book has less than the last one ("Ripper"), but it is NOT anywhere near as free of them as most novels I read.
Again, the biggest turnoff, to me, are the erroneous firearms that DLG places in his books. One example someone is shooting a thirty-five millimeter pistol. Now, even non-metric users should know that '35 mm.' is a film size and is equal to 3.5 cm. which is about 1.6 inches ... a huge diameter for a bullet [in fact, the aircraft cannon on an A-10 is only 30 mm.], although okay maybe for a flare gun - there is no hand-weapon that I know of in 35 mm !!! I can believe in werewolves and divine-inscriptions faster than these kinds of errors.
I look forward each year to the newest release in the Event Group Series. The adventures are always fun, the characters are enjoyable and the science fiction/historical aspect to Mr. Golemon's series are informative and entertaining.
Generally, I purchase the hard cover of this series as soon as they're out, but this time I read it on my . One of my ongoing criticisms of this series is that each one has seemed to suffer from lack of a good proofreader. The version did not differ from the print versions in this aspect. I found constant errors. There were multiple typos in Carpathian. The fact that I found them at all makes me think there are many more that escaped my notice. Golemon has a tendency in this one to alternate his pronouns when referring to the animals featured in the plot. In one sentence he uses "he" and the next sentence, "it," even when the story is told from the animal's own point of view.
Reading on the always makes novels seem longer than reading the print versions. Carpathian was slightly longer in page count than previous Event Group novels, but the fact that the first third of the novel weighed heavily toward the villains and another group of characters involved in the story made it seem a slog. I wanted to get to my beloved Event Group personnel. This factor, in addition to a very lengthy action sequence at the end made me think that in addition to a proofreader, Golemon might benefit from a new editor. For all of these reasons, I can only give this three stars. For the first time, I just wanted to finish an Event Group novel. Previously, I've not wanted them to end.
All of that said, the payoff as to the "treasure" was quite good, although not unexpected. Golemon's recurring characters were on point and made me laugh out loud, as always. The end of Carpathian sets up the next novel - one I'm definitely looking forward to reading.
