Bought this for a friend who loved it!
This is my favorite book about poetry; [I also like several of Ciardi's own books of poetry, as well as his translation of The Divine Comedy. The author visited my college in the 60s. His remarks made a life-long impression on me about what poetry can do for one, and how one might choose what to do with one's life.
Ciardi is brilliant in his analysis of poems.
Used it in college 30 years ago. Still the best.
My college professor recommended this to me when I expressed interest into poetry. This book has had a profound impact on my understanding about poetry and my ability to write poetry. The author does an excellent job of really answering HOW a poem means and not WHAT a poem means. Not only does he do a great job of explaining poetics, he also fills the book with many great poems. Forcing yourself to read all of them will leave you with a much deeper appreciation and respect for the art form.

If you are at all interested in verse, this should be essential reading.
This book was gift for my niece. Although it was well-used, it was still a keeper. Actually it is my favorite book on poetry and contains many classics.
