The Crickhowell School for the Muses A Novel Rachel Waxman Books
I download this book based on the great reviews, began reading it, and very quickly began wondering "Wait, am I reading the same book?" I am glad the previous reviewers enjoyed it, but I found The Crickhowell School for the Muses to be unrelentingly dull. There is no insight offered of the protagonist's experience of the narrative, as the author has chosen to make us privy to neither her words not her thoughts; the additional characters are shallow caricatures; and the plot is an inventive idea executed with little panache. This read like a dry classroom exercise in putting a modern twist on the classic fairytale, rather than a tale that truly seized the author's imagination, and almost certainly would have been better as a short story.Tags : Amazon.com: The Crickhowell School for the Muses: A Novel (9781564745415): Rachel Waxman: Books,Rachel Waxman,The Crickhowell School for the Muses: A Novel,Daniel & Daniel Publishers,1564745414,Action & Adventure - General,Fantasy & Magic,Kidnapping,Kidnapping victims,Kidnapping victims;Juvenile fiction.,Schools,Schools;Juvenile fiction.,Singers,Singers;Juvenile fiction.,Singing,Adventure stories (Children's Teenage),Children: Grades 4-6,JUVENILE,JUVENILE FICTION Action & Adventure General,JUVENILE FICTION Fantasy & Magic,JUVENILE FICTION General,Juvenile Fiction,Juvenile FictionAction & Adventure - General,Juvenile Grades 4-6 Ages 9-11,Young Adult Fiction, young adult; muse; music; rural village; magic
The Crickhowell School for the Muses A Novel Rachel Waxman Books Reviews
Unsatisfactory ending and the writing was juvenile, even for a YA novel. I will not read another book by this author.
Well worth the read--and I hope there's more to come. The concept is interesting and the characters are generally complex. Is there a sequel? I'll buy it.
I really enjoyed this book. It was easy to read and was a very different premise. I thought it creative and kept engaged throughout. I would definitely read this author again.
I really liked this book in a quiet sort of way. It isn't full of suspense or action, but enough to keep me reading. I really became invested in the main character and want to see what happens to her next.
I thought this book a little too wierd for my taste. I thought it was going to be really good when the little girl was taken to the school but then it got strange. I thought the book had great possibilities but never fulfilled them.
Years ago children are kidnapped and trained to be muses for artists, this tale is based on a young girl who goes to the Crickhowell school, her training and the things she must endure to survive. It is interesting and it keeps your attention. It leaves you thinking, It does keep your attention as she goes through her adventures. You cheer her on as she goes and you cry with her.
This book is about children who are kidnapped and mistreated, preparing them to be sent to a "patron" who wants someone with their specific talents singing dancing, etc. About halfway into the book, a competing school open (by kidnapping victims from the first school). I get the impression that from there out it becomes a competition to see who gets to mistreat the children. I say that I get the impression, because I'd had it with the odious people in this dystopian version of schools for the gifted. Imagine Professor Snape as the nice guy and you've got the general idea.
Of course, I did only finish half of it- maybe the children got lucky and were swallowed by an earthquake.
