A Novel Idea The Romantic Comedies Aimee Friedman Books
Having read one of Aimee Friedman's more serious novels it was nice to see her older works (i.e., before she developed more writing skills). This small novel being part of a bigger series directed towards young teens it was to be expected that there were cliche parts; however, I identified with the main character on her interests of books and search for love. Overall a nice read with some great moments!Tags : Amazon.com: A Novel Idea (The Romantic Comedies) (9781416907855): Aimee Friedman: Books,Aimee Friedman,A Novel Idea (The Romantic Comedies),Simon Pulse,1416907858,Romance - General,School & Education - General,Social Themes - General,Book clubs (Discussion groups),Books and reading;Fiction.,Dating (Social customs);Fiction.,High school students,Man-woman relationships,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 10-12),General fiction (Children's Teenage),Humorous Stories,JUVENILE FICTION Humorous Stories,JUVENILE FICTION Love & Romance,Juvenile FictionLove & Romance,Love & Romance,YOUNG ADULT FICTION,Young Adult Fiction Romance General,Young Adult Fiction School & Education General,Young Adult Fiction Social Themes General (see also headings under Family),Children: Young Adult (Gr. 7-9)
A Novel Idea The Romantic Comedies Aimee Friedman Books Reviews
Simon Pulse Romantic Comedies are always a fun read. These books are not necessarily the best written novels but the stories are always fun and you know you will get a happy ending. I think some adult romances could take a note from these books b/c they are characterized well which is much of the battle in writing any novel since you want your characters, for the most part, to be endearing and relatable.
Meet Norah, a Brooklyn highschool junior, who has a hard time meeting people (especially guys). She's shy, smart... a real girl next door type.
When she finds out she needs some extracurriculars on her college applications, she gets this idea to start up a book club at her favorite local book store, Book Nook. Her two friends Audre and Scott help out with the organizing. At first she thinks it's a disaster, but then she falls for one the guys, James, who joined. Now she just has to figure out how to get him to notice her.
This was a short bok than any teen would love.
I've only read about three Romantic Comedies, but this has been one of the best, and funniest.
The main character, looking for ways to prepare for college, starts a book group. An odd group of characters form, all bringing something very unique and funny to the group. For someone who didn't consider herself a "romantic," Norah doesn't count on one of the group members to make her change her mind. For a light, fun read, definitely read this one.
In the beginning and in the end of reading this book, I did enjoy it. It was parts in the middle that made it seem a bit too silly and unbelieveable. Not to say all novels must BE believeable but there were just points where there was no way a girl would ever go through such lengths to win over a guy. Well, in my opinion anyway. But other than that i really enjoyed the book. I felt i could see myself in a lot of the characters during the story. Its not a great read but i do recommend it to others because it was indeed still entertaining. I will probably search out more of Aimee's books too see if there are ones bettert than this one.

Plot
I didn't particularly favor this book. It wasn't horrible by any means, but it didn't really capture my attention too well, and it was not realistic (at least in my opinion of realistic-ness; everyone's is different).
I thought the book was a little bit too cliche with the love story. It had a unique plot in the way that it was through a book club, which was pretty cool, but the way Norah (the main character) and James' (the love interest) relationship played out has been done thousands of times before, it feels like.
A Novel Idea was a quick read, though, and I finished it in one sitting.
Characters
I don't really know how I stand with Norah. It's not that I don't like her, but I definitely did not agree with the way that she went around trying to get James to like her. She seems like one of those girls that you just shake your head at.
She went to great lengths, hurting people along her way, to get James, and she was extremely selfish with her endeavors.
I did like her at the other times when she wasn't on her missions to get James to like her. She was extremely dedicated to her book club, and didn't want to let them down. I liked that part of her.
James was cute, though I didn't really feel too connected to him because not much of his personality was revealed. I mean, sure, I knew he liked to read, and was shy, but there has got to be more to a person that that, right? I can definitely see though, if he had been more developed, how he could have been swoon-worthy.
Writing
I wasn't completely enthralled with Aimee Friedman's writing. It definitely kept the story going, but there was nothing especially special about it. For example, there wasn't an amazing vocabulary used or exceptional cliff-hangers. But again, it wasn't bad by any means, either.
Ending
This book is definitely one of those feel-good fluff-reads, and the ending completely solidifies that. It was cute, and tied up the loose ends in the book nicely.
Cover
For whatever reason, I always think these types of covers for the little romance books are super cute. I especially like this one because of all of the books on it. ;)
The Final Verdict
I think this book is cute, and it not a challenging read. I recommend this book for people that are fans of cheesy little romances, and like books about books.
I have been collecting the Simon Pulse Romantic Comedies over the past year or so and I'm happy to say I've finally picked up one an read it and I sure started with a great one!
The premise of A Novel Idea sounds promising a shy bookish girl starts a book club at a local bookstore/coffee shop to bulk up her college resume and hopes to find a cute boy in the process. And holy cow the book did not disappoint. It was as sweet, bookish, and nerdy as I hoped it would be!
Norah was very easy to relate to, she's well read (with a secret love of romance novels) and has two outgoing and fun best friends Audre and Scott. And of course her wish comes true of a sweet and nerdy book boy in her book club in the form of James. James is the ultimate nerdy cute boy, I would totally go for that. I thought their semi-relationship was sweet and how they were both too shy to really do anything until Norah hatches a plan with the help of one of her romance novels... hilarity ensues!
As promised the book is funny and romantic and I can't wait to read more from this series!
